Karate

You want a discipline, not just a workout. Karate is your dojo.

Why Karate fits you

Karate is a structured striking art with a long lineage. The best schools build crisp technique, physical discipline, and a real sense of community — and many run excellent kids and family programs. Your answers fit the karateka: you value structure and craft, you want something the whole household can do, and you'd rather earn a stripe through consistency than chase the adrenaline of hard sparring. Quality varies wildly between schools — visit a few before picking.

What to expect in your first class

Kihon (basics), kata (forms), kumite (sparring) — the three Ks. First class focuses on stance, basic strikes, and one or two kata. Sparring is rare on day one and is controlled when it happens. You'll wear a gi (the school often provides your first one). Expect a lot of structure and a formal warm-up and cool-down.

What it'll cost

$100–$160/month at most schools — family rates often available.
