Judo
You love a big throw. Judo is your art.
Why Judo fits you
Judo is the Olympic grappling art — throws, takedowns, and pins, with a side of submissions on the ground. It's structured, traditional, and one of the best foundations for self-defense (because most fights end up in a clinch). Your answers fit the judoka: you respect structure, you can handle hard physical work, and you're drawn to the explosive moment of a perfect throw. Judo dojos can be hard to find in some US cities — search local clubs, YMCAs, and university teams.
What to expect in your first class
First class is ukemi (breakfalls) — back, side, forward rolls — before any throw. You'll wear a gi. Once you can fall safely, you'll learn the basic mechanics of o-soto-gari or ippon seoi-nage with a cooperative partner. Most schools end class with light randori (sparring) where you can sit out as a beginner. The mat is unforgiving the first week.
What it'll cost
$70–$150/month — many judo programs run out of community centers and YMCAs and are very affordable.
