Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

You think your way through problems. BJJ is your sport.

Why BJJ fits you

BJJ is a thinker's grappling art. There's no striking, no head trauma, and a smaller person can routinely tap out a larger one through technique. You'll spend years building a position-by-position understanding of leverage, frames, grips, and submissions — it's a craft, not a workout. Your answers point to someone who wants to be challenged mentally, train consistently, and avoid hard impact. That is exactly the BJJ student profile.

What to expect in your first class

Your first BJJ class is typically a fundamentals or beginner session: 10–15 minutes of mobility and shrimping drills, 20–30 minutes drilling one or two techniques (an escape, a sweep, a submission), then optional rolling. You'll wear a gi the gym provides, get matched with an experienced partner, and almost certainly get tapped out. That's the point. Nobody expects you to win — they want to see if you keep showing up.

What it'll cost

$140–$200/month at most reputable academies. Less if you have a community-based or no-frills gym nearby; more in major metros.
